David’s Health Update: Hitting the Gym

Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
1 Timothy 4:7-8, ESV

It’s been over a year since I’ve been able to consistently go to a gym. In fact, about a week before I got sick in September of last year was the first time I ever did a deadlift. That’s one of the reasons that I thought I’d just thrown my back out or something instead of a rheumatic disease.

I am so thankful that I’m healthy enough to work out again. I have to take it really slow, though. Today was the third time in the past two weeks that I’ve been to the gym. Yesterday, I struggled through 6 minutes on a treadmill running before feeling like throwing up… 6 minutes! That’s humbling. I “power walked” another three minutes or so, ran another two minutes, and had to cool down and quit.

Slow and steady wins the race. It’s going to take a while to get into shape, but I’m committed. I have to be. When I got sick, it wasn’t just my joints that were affected; this disease attacks your heart, too. On top of that, from a combination of factors including a year of inactivity, my cholesterol went up really high and I gained a bunch of weight.

Basically, I have to get in shape, but I’m actually enjoying myself, too. I just spent 2.5 hours at the gym without really thinking about it. Time flies when you’re having fun. This time, I was mainly on the elliptical machine and did some very light weight training.

Please pray for this process! I don’t want to sound cheesy or “overly spiritual”, but I want this to be a part of “training [my]self for godliness”. Please pray that Katya and I both continue to get more and more healthy spiritually and physically.

A movie review: The Intern

I’m going to try out something a little bit different with this blog post. Since starting to study cinematography and produce / direct Christian shortfilms, my perspective on every movie I watch or even every story I hear has changed immensely. I search for different elements, look for certain camera techniques, etc. It’s a subconscious thing that’s built-into my viewing experience now, because I’m no longer a passive viewer. I’m thinking the entire time, “Would I create this movie, tell this story, this way?

By the way, this is my very first film review, so if you have your own feedback, please leave a comment below. 🙂

That brings me to The Intern. Continue reading “A movie review: The Intern”

Invictus Christi

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank my God, Who set me free,
And saved my mortal soul.

Even when suffering, cruci fixus,
He did not wince nor cry aloud.
Paying my debt, my Lord Invictus,
His head was bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears,
I’ll find my place in His parade,
And so the menace of the years,
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
Christ is the Master of my fate,
And the Captain of my soul.

Adapted from Invictus by William Ernest Henley, a poem written in 1875.

Another GREAT team from Georgia! (…and a broken cell phone)

We had another AMAZING team here last week. They came here from Clayton Baptist Church in Georgia. They were here for 10 days, served MANY families with financial difficulties by buying groceries and visiting them, went with us to a village to help build some missionaries’ house, and celebrated Thanksgiving with us. Here are some pictures from that:

In other news, David’s phone broke. We’re looking for a good, quality replacement, because David uses his phone constantly for work as a “second computer.” He needs it to be a good audio / video recorder and handle a full day’s worth of emailing, word processing, and other office work. Please pray for that! Thanks!
